While all the renovation was going on we had to eat, so one of
the first major installations was the kitchen. We could sleep
under the bare slates of the roof and the lounge was bare stone
walls but habitable. We had sanitation in the room behind the
kitchen but cooking and food preparation became urgent. The last
owner had plans to use what is now our kitchen as a bedroom and
the walls were plastered but the electrics were too light, corroded
and unearthed so we rewired entirely. A cooker that ran on bottled
gas replaced our barbecue as our main cooking appliance and self-assembly
units and a donated sink gave us the basics for the rest. Shelving,
wallpaper and paint produced a kitchen/breakfast room that is
as modern as any yet still gives a “country kitchen”
feel.
